Baptism, a Call to Commitment
Baptism as a way to the freedom of the children of God and as a way to a life in community calls for a personal commitment.
There is nothing magical or automatic about this sacrament.
Having water poured over us while someone says, "I baptise you in the Name of the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit", has lasting significance only when we are willing to claim and reclaim in all possible way the spiritual truth of who we are as baptised people.
In this sense baptism is a call to parents of baptised children and to the baptised themselves to choose constantly for the light in the midst of a dark world and for life in the midst of a death- harbouring society.
세례, 결단으로 부르심 하나님의 자녀가 누리는 자유함으로 가는 길로서, 그리고 공동체 속 삶으로 가는 길로서, 세례는 받는 사람 개인에게 결단을 요구합니다. 세례라고 하는 이 성례전에 마술처럼 자동적으로 이루어내는 무언가가 있는 것은 아닙니다. 누군가가 “아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 줍니다” 라고 말하면서 우리의 머리 위로 물을 붓는 것은, 세례 받은 사람으로서 우리는 누구인가 라고 하는 영적인 진실을 가능한 모든 방법으로 기꺼이 붙잡고 또 붙잡으려 할 때에만 변치 않는 깊은 의미를 가집니다. 이런 의미에서 세례는 세례 받는 자녀들의 부모와 세례 받는 당사자들에게 어두운 세상의 한 가운데에서 항상 빛을 선택하기를, 그리고 죽음을 머금고 있는 사회 한 가운데에서 항상 생명을 선택하기를 요구합니다.
