The Church, Spotless and Tainted
The Church is holy and sinful, spotless and tainted.
The Church is the bride of Christ, who washed her in cleansing water and took her to himself "with no speck or wrinkle or anything like that, but holy and faultless" (Ephesians 5:26- 27).
The Church too is a group of sinful, confused, anguished people constantly tempted by the powers of lust and greed and always entangled in rivalry and competition.
When we say that the Church is a body, we refer not only to the holy and faultless body made Christ-like through baptism and Eucharist but also to the broken bodies of all the people who are its members.
Only when we keep both these ways of thinking and speaking together can we live in the Church as true followers of Jesus.
얼룩이 없으면서 또한 얼룩 져 있는 교회
교회는 거룩하면서도 죄로 가득하고, 얼룩이 없으면서 또한 얼룩 져 있습니다.
교회는, 그리스도께서 깨끗하게 하는 물로 씻어서 “얼룩이나 흠결 또는 그러한 어떤 것도 없이 거룩하고 무결한” 상태로 데려가신, 그리스도의 신부입니다. (에베소서 5:26-27)
교회는 또한 끊임없이 육체적 욕망과 탐욕의 힘에 시험을 받으며 언제나 경쟁과 겨룸에서 벗어나지 못하는, 죄 많고, 어찌할 바를 모르는, 고통에 찬 사람들의 모임입니다.
교회를 몸이라고 이야기할 때, 우리는 세례와 성만찬을 통하여 그리스도를 닮게 만들어진 거룩하고 흠 없는 몸을 말할 뿐만 아니라, 또한 교회의 구성원인 모든 사람 각각의 불완전한 몸을 말하기도 합니다.
이런 두 가지 면을 함께 생각하고 말하기를 계속할 때에만, 우리는 교회에서 참된 예수 따르미로서 살 수 있습니다.
