Being in the Church, Not of It
Often we hear the remark that we have to live in the world without being of the world.
But it may be more difficult to be in the Church without being of the Church.
Being of the Church means being so preoccupied by and involved in the many ecclesial affairs and clerical "ins and outs" that we are no longer focused on Jesus.
The Church then blinds us to what we came to see and deafens us to what we came to hear.
Still, it is in the Church that Christ dwells, invites us to his table, and speaks to us words of eternal love.
Being in the Church without being of it is a great spiritual challenge.
교회에 있되 교회에 속해있지 않기
우리는 세상에 속해있지 않고 세상에서 살아야 한다는 언급을 자주 듣습니다.
그러나 교회에 속해있지 않고 교회에 있는다는 것이 더 어려울 수 있습니다.
교회에 속해 있다는 것은 교회라는 조직에서 일어나는 일들과 성직자들과 관계되는 “시콜콜한 일들”에 너무나 사로잡히고 관련되어 있는 나머지 우리가 예수께 더 이상 초점이 맞춰져 있지 않는 것을 의미합니다.
그럴 때 교회는 우리가 보게 된 것을 볼 수 없도록 우리의 눈을 멀게 하고, 우리가 듣게 된 것을 들을 수 없도록 귀를 먹게 합니다.
그럼에도 그리스도께서 머무르시면서 그의 식탁으로 초대하시고, 영원한 사랑의 말씀을 우리에게 전하시는 것은 교회 안에서입니다.
교회에 속해있지 않고 교회에 있는다는 것은 큰 영적인 과제입니다.
