Baptism, The Way to Freedom
When parents have their children baptised they indicate their desire to have their children grow up and live as children of God and brothers or sisters of Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Through birth a child is given to parents; through baptism a child is given to God.
At baptism the parents acknowledge that their parenthood is a participation in God's parenthood, that all fatherhood and motherhood comes from God.
Thus baptism frees the parents from a sense of owning their children.
Children belong to God and are given to the parents to love and care for in God's name.
It is the parents' vocation to welcome their children as honoured guests in their home and bring them to the physical, emotional and spiritual freedom that enables them to leave the home and become parents themselves.
Baptism reminds parents of this vocation and sets children on the path of freedom.
세례, 자유함으로 가는 길
부모가 자신들의 자녀들을 세례 받게 하는 것은 자녀들이 자라서 하나님의 자녀로, 또한 예수의 형제자매로 살게 하고 성령의 인도하심을 받게 하고 싶다는 소망을 드러내는 것입니다. 태어남을 통하여 자녀는 부모에게 주어지고, 세례를 통하여 자녀는 하나님께 주어집니다. 세례를 받을 때 부모는 자신들의 부모됨이 하나님의 부모됨에 참여하는 것임을, 또한 모든 아버지됨과 어머니됨은 하나님으로부터 나오는 것임을 인정하는 것입니다. 그러므로 세례를 통하여 부모들은 자녀들을 소유한다는 느낌으로부터 자유로워집니다. 자녀들은 하나님께 속해있고, 당신을 대신하여 사랑하고 돌보라고 부모에게 주신 것입니다. 자녀들을 부모의 집을 찾아온 영예로운 손님으로 환영하고, 집을 떠나서 부모가 될 수 있도록 그들을 데리고 육체적, 정서적, 영적 자유함으로 이끌어 가는 것은 부모들의 소명입니다. 세례는 부모들에게 이 소명을 일깨우며 자녀들을 자유함의 길로 가게 합니다.
