A Choice Calling for Discipline
When we look critically at the many thoughts and feelings that fill our minds and hearts, we may come to the horrifying discovery that we often choose death instead of life, curse instead of blessing.
Jealousy, envy, anger, resentment, greed, lust, vindictiveness, revenge, hatred... they all float in that large reservoir of our inner life.
Often we take them for granted and allow them to be there and do their destructive work.
But God asks us to choose life and to choose blessing.
This choice requires an immense inner discipline.
It requires a great attentiveness to the death-forces within us and a great commitment to let the forces of life come to dominate our thoughts and feelings.
We cannot always do this alone; often we need a caring guide or a loving community to support us.
But it is important that we both make the inner effort and seek the support we need from others to help us choose life. 훈련을 요하는 선택 우리의 의식과 마음을 채우는 많은 생각들과 느낌들을 꼼꼼히 살펴 볼 때, 우리는 흔히 생명 대신에 죽음을, 복 대신에 저주를 선택한다는 끔찍한 발견을 하게 될지도 모릅니다. 질투심, 시샘, 노여움, 원한, 탐욕, 욕망, 복수심, 앙갚음, 미움... 그 모두는 우리의 내적인 생명이라는 그 큰 저수지 속을 떠다닙니다. 흔히 우리는 그것들을 당연시하고 거기에 있으면서 파괴적인 일을 하도록 내버려 둡니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리에게 생명을 선택하라고, 복을 선택하라고 요청하십니다. 이러한 선택은 막대한 내적 훈련을 필요로 합니다. 그렇게 하기 위해서는 우리 속에 있는 죽음의 '힘'으로부터 눈을 떼지 않는 큰 집중력과, 생명의 힘이 우리의 생각과 느낌들을 다스리도록 맡기는 큰 결단을 필요로 합니다. 언제나 우리 혼자 이런 일을 할 수는 없습니다; 종종 우리는 우리를 보살펴주는 인도 혹은 우리를 지탱해주는 사랑의 공동체가 필요합니다. 그러나 우리 자신이 생명을 선택하는 것을 돕기 위해서 우리는 내적인 노력을 함과 동시에 다른 사람들로부터 필요로 하는 도움을 구하는 것이 중요합니다
