Living Faithfully in an Ambiguous World
Our hearts and minds desire clarity.
We like to have a clear picture of a situation, a clear view of how things fit together, and clear insight into our own and the world's problems.
But just as in nature colours and shapes mingle without clear-cut distinctions, human life doesn't offer the clarity we are looking for.
The borders between love and hate, evil and good, beauty and ugliness, heroism and cowardice, care and neglect, guilt and blamelessness are mostly vague, ambiguous, and hard to discern.
It is not easy to live faithfully in a world full of ambiguities.
We have to learn to make wise choices without needing to be entirely sure.
불명확한 세상 속에서 충실하게 살아가기
우리의 마음 중심과 지성은 명확한 것을 바랍니다.
어떤 상황에 대한 명확한 그림을, 일들이 함께 잘 맞아 들어가게 볼 수 있는 그런 명확한 관점을, 그리고 우리 자신과 세상의 문제 속을 꿰뚫어보는 명확한 통찰을 갖기를 좋아합니다.
그러나 자연에서 보면 색과 모양이 뚜렷이 딱 잘라 구별할 수 없이 섞여 있는 것과 꼭 마찬가지로, 인간의 삶도 우리가 찾고 있는 명확함을 제공해주지 못합니다.
사랑과 미움, 선과 악, 아름다움과 추함, 의연함과 비겁함, 보살핌과 내버려둠, 죄와 결백 사이의 경계는 보통 애매하고, 모호하며, 그리고 분별하기가 쉽지 않습니다.
불확실한 것으로 가득한 세상에서 충실하게 살아간다는 것은 쉽지는 않습니다.
우리는 완전히 확신해야한다는 필요성을 느끼지 않고도 지혜로운 선택을 하는 것을 배워야 합니다.
