Loving Our Religious Leaders
Religious leaders, priests, ministers, rabbis and imams can be admired and revered but also hated and despised.
We expect that our religious leaders will bring us closer to God through their prayers, teaching and guidance.
Therefore, we watch their behaviour carefully and listen critically to their words.
But precisely because we expect them, often without fully realising it, to be superhuman, we are easily disappointed or even feel betrayed when they prove to be just as human as we are.
Thus our unmitigated admiration quickly turns into unrestrained anger.
Let's try to love our religious leaders, forgive them their faults, and see them as brothers and sisters.
Then we will enable them, in their brokenness, to lead us closer to the heart of God.
우리의 종교 지도자를 사랑하기
종교 지도자들, 신부와 목사들, 랍비와 이맘들은 사랑과 존경을 받을 수 있을 뿐 아니라 미움을 받고 경멸을 당할 수도 있습니다.
우리는 종교 지도자들이 그들의 기도와 가르침, 인도를 통해서 우리를 하나님께로 더 가까이 인도할 것으로 기대를 합니다.
그러므로 우리는 그들의 행동거지를 주의 깊게 보고, 그들의 말을 비판적으로 듣습니다.
그러나 정확히 말하면 우리는 그 지도자들이 초인들이 되기를 바라기 때문에 - 우리는 흔히 자신들이 그렇게 바라고 있다는 사실 조차도 제대로 느끼지 못합니다만- 그들이 우리와 똑같은 인간일 뿐이라는 것이 드러났을 때 우리는 쉽게 실망하고 심지어는 배신감까지 느끼게 되는 것입니다.
따라서 우리의 열렬한 존경과 사랑은 곧바로 참을 수 없는 분노로 변해버리는 것입니다.
우리의 종교적 지도자들을 사랑하고, 그들의 결점을 용서하며, 그들도 우리의 형제와 자매로 보아야 합니다.
그럴 때 우리는 그 지도자들이 그들의 부족한 모습에도 불구하고 우리를 하나님의 마음 중심으로 더 가까이 인도하게 할 수 있습니다.
