The Most Human and Most Divine Gesture
The two disciples whom Jesus joined on the road to Emmaus recognised him in the breaking of the bread.
What is a more common, ordinary gesture than breaking bread?
It may be the most human of all human gestures: a gesture of hospitality, friendship, care and the desire to be together.
Taking a loaf of bread, blessing it, breaking it and giving it to those seated around the table signifies unity, community and peace.
When Jesus does this he does the most ordinary as well as the most extraodinary.
It is the most human as well as the most divine gesture.
The great mystery is that this daily and most human gesture is the way we recognise the presence of Christ among us.
God becomes most present when we are most human.
가장 인간적인 동시에 가장 신적인 몸짓
엠마오로 가던 길에서 만나 예수께서 동행하셨던 두 제자들은 떡을 뗄 때에 그를 알아보았습니다. 떡을 떼는 것보다 더 평범하고 일상적인 몸짓이 무엇이 있을까요? 그 것은 따뜻함, 우정, 보살핌 그리고 함께 하고자 하는 마음을 보여주는 몸짓이기에 인간의 모든 몸짓들 중에 가장 인간적인 것입니다. 떡 한 덩이를 가지고, 축복하며, 떼어서 식탁에 둘러 앉아 있는 사람들에게 나누어 주는 것은 하나됨, 공동체 그리고 평화를 뜻합니다. 예수께서 이 일을 하실 때, 그는 가장 특별한 것을 하는 것임과 동시에 가장 평범한 것을 하시는 것입니다. 그 것은 가장 신적인 몸짓임과 동시에 가장 인간적인 몸짓입니다. 하루 하루의 가장 인간적인 이러한 몸짓이 우리 가운데 계시는 그리스도의 현존을 깨닫는 길이라는 사실은 위대한 신비입니다. 하나님은 우리가 가장 인간적일 때 가장 뚜렷이 현존하시게 됩니다.
