The Companion of Our Souls
When the two disciples recognised Jesus as he broke the bread for them in their house in Emmaus, he "vanished from their sight" (Luke 24:31).
The recognition and the disappearance of Jesus are one and the same event.
Why?
Because the disciples recognised that their Lord Jesus, the Christ, now lives in them . . . that they have become Christ-bearers.
Therefore, Jesus no longer sits across the table from them as the stranger, the guest, the friend with whom they can speak and from whom they can receive good counsel.
He has become one with them.
He has given them his own Spirit of Love.
Their companion on the journey has become the companion of their souls.
They are alive, yet it is no longer them, but Christ living in them (see Galatians 2:20).
영혼의 동반자
엠마오의 두 제자의 집에서 예수께서 그들에게 주시려고 떡을 떼실 때, 그 분이 예수임을 알아차리던 순간, 예수께서는 “그들의 시야에서 사라져버리셨습니다.” (누가 24:31)
예수를 알아차림과 예수의 사라짐은 하나의 똑같은 사건입니다.
왜 그럴까요?
제자들은 주님이신 예수, 바로 그리스도께서 지금 그들 속에 살아 계시다는 것을... 그들은 그리스도를 간직한 자들이 되었다는 것을 깨닫게 되었기 때문입니다.
그러므로, 예수는 함께 이야기할 수 있고 충고를 줄 수 있는 타인, 손님, 친구로서 그들 너머 식탁 건너편에 더 이상 앉아계시지 않습니다.
그는 이제 그들과 하나가 되셨습니다.
그는 그들에게 자신이 가지신 사랑의 성령을 주셨습니다.
엠마오로 가던 길의 동반자는 영혼의 동반자가 되었던 것입니다.
그들은 살아있으나, 더 이상 그들이 산 것이 아니라 그리스도께서 그들 안에서 사시는 것입니다. (갈 2:20 참고)
