The great gift of parenthood
Children are their parent's guests.
They come into the space that has been created for them, stay for a while- fifteen, twenty or twenty-five years- and leave again to create their own space.
Although parents speak about "our son" and "our daughter", their children are not their property.
In many ways children are strangers.
Parents have to come to know them, discover their strengths and their weakness, and guide them to maturity, allowing them to make their own decisions.
The greatest gift parents can give their children is their love for each other.
Through that love they create an anxiety-free place for their children to grow, encouraging them to develop confidence in themselves and find the freedom to choose their own ways in life.
부모됨이라는 큰 선물
아이들은 부모들에게 있어서 손님입니다.
그들은 자신들을 위해서 만들어진 공간으로 들어와서, 잠시 동안 - 십 오년, 이십년, 혹은 이십오년 - 머물다가 그들만의 공간을 만들기 위해서 다시 떠납니다.
부모들은 “우리 아들”, “우리 딸”에 관해서 말을 하지만, 아이들은 그들의 소유물이 아닙니다.
여러모로 아이들은 손님입니다.
부모들은 그들을 알고, 그들의 강점과 약점을 발견해서 성숙함으로 인도하여, 그들 자신들만의 선택을 할 수 있도록 해주어야 합니다.
부모가 아이들에게 줄 수 있는 가장 큰 선물은 부부 간에 서로 사랑하는 모습입니다.
그 사랑을 통해서 부모들은 자녀들이 자랄 수 있는 불안감이 없는 곳을 만들게 되며, 자신감을 계발하고 그들 자신만의 삶의 방식을 선택할 수 있는 자유를 찾도록 북돋울 수 있습니다.
