Friendship in the Twilight Zones of Our Hearts
There is a twilight zone in our own hearts that we ourselves cannot see.
Even when we know quite a lot about ourselves - our gifts and weaknesses, our ambitions and aspirations, our motives and drives - large parts of ourselves remain in the shadow of consciousness.
This is a very good thing.
We will always remain partially hidden to ourselves.
Other people, especially those who love us, can often see our twilight zones better than we ourselves can.
The way we are seen and understood by others is different from the way we see and understand ourselves.
We will never fully know the significance of our presence in the lives of our friends.
That's a grace, a grace that calls us not only to humility but also to a deep trust in those who love us.
It is in the twilight zones of our hearts where true friendships are born.
우리 중심의 어둑한 영역에 존재하는 우정
우리 자신들의 중심에는 스스로는 볼 수 없는 어둑한 영역이 있습니다.
우리가 자신에 관해서 아주 많은 것을 -우리의 재능과 약점, 야망과 포부, 동기와 의욕- 안다고 할 때조차도 우리 자신의 많은 부분들은 의식이 미치지 못하는 곳에 있습니다.
이것은 매우 좋은 일입니다.
우리는 언제나 우리 자신 속에 부분적으로 숨겨진 상태로 있을 것입니다.
다른 사람들, 특히나 우리를 사랑하는 사람들은 종종 우리의 어둑한 곳을 우리 자신들보다 더 잘 볼 수 있습니다.
다른 사람들이 우리를 보고 생각하는 방식은 우리가 우리 자신을 보고 생각하는 방식과는 다릅니다.
우리는 우리 친구들의 삶에 있어서 우리의 존재가 어떤 중대한 의미를 가지는지 완전히 알지는 못할 것입니다.
그 것은 은혜, 즉 우리를 겸손뿐만 아니라 우리를 사랑하는 사람들에 대한 깊은 신뢰 속으로 부르는 은혜입니다.
참된 우정이 생겨나는 곳은 바로 우리 중심의 어둑한 곳입니다.
